The 1956 presidential campaign saw a rematch of Dwight D. Eisenhower and Adlai Stevenson from 1952. During his first term, President Eisenhower successfully ended the conflict in Korea and, with the death of Soviet Premier, Josef Stalin, saw an opportunity for a reset in American-Soviet foreign relations. The divide between East and West, however, was shaped and reinforced when a civil war broke out in Vietnam. The former French colony was split at the 17th parallel between the Northern Communists and the Southern, more democratic leaning American-backed regime. This further entrenched the Cold War divide in South East Asia and a "hot war," similar to Korea, seemed inevitable.
